Tuesday, May 28th 2013: Magna-Tiles and Letters!

Our friends have been working a lot with our classroom magna-tiles and the projector. They have been enjoying creating shapes and reaching up high on the wall to trace the shapes with their hands. Today, Benjamin discovered a new shape while connecting triangle tiles - A HEXAGON!! When Ben had trouble finding the last triangle his friends pitched in to find exactly the right shape to complete Hexagon.

After much trial and error they finally found the right piece!

We reached up high counted all the straight sides of the colorful hexagon.

In small group work we divided to create a new watercolor project.  We have been talking a lot lately in morning assembly about the letters that begin our names.  Using The Hidden Alphabet by Laura Vaccaro Seeger, we have been discovering new letters together and linking them to our friends.  We used our expertise in watercolor to reinforce this interest. We prepped our initial art with masking tape and watercolor paper and gave our friends large wide brushes to bathe their whole paper in color.

Our friends focused on filling their pages and spent a lot of time tracing the letters of their names. We are excited to see what happens when we remove the tape!

Pic of the Day: Jai peeks in while Tessa tackles a stump perfect for climbing!

Thursday, May 23rd, 2013: Composition and Relief

Building on our experience with our newest artistic medium, WOOD, Ms. Lisa. introduced an exciting new project to our friends this week.   We worked with large pieces of cardboard, laying out our COMPOSITION or pattern of wood. We used the word layer to describe how our work would be wide and low instead of the high wood spool towers we'd built before.

Using wood glue and glue brushes we followed our pattern, adding the wood pieces to the cardboard to create a RELEIF! Our friends worked very hard on putting thier glue only on the bottom portions of their wood pieces and carefully placing their pieces close to eachother.  They have made such strides in using artisitic language and understanding artisitic concepts. Their wood reliefs came out beautifully!

Next week, we will try sanding our pieces and then the final layer, paint!

We had to share this one: PHOTO OF THE WEEK

Don't worry! There was much discussion and always a teacher lurking by for safety!

Wednesday, May 22nd, 2013: Highlights and Flashbacks

During morning work, Wendell and Logan partner to build an elaborate house, made of blocks.  It proved interesting because while they were clearly working separately, they were able to share materials and build toward a mutual goal! They took up most of the classroom floor during construction. Way to go boys!

Here is an oldie for you guys. An audio clip we never posted from our trip to the Kensington Stables.  Our favorite horse, Chocolate Chip was late to the stables and we had to STALL! Enjoy our conversation and one of our favorite classroom songs, "See the Ponies Galloping!"

Tuesday, May 21th, 2013: The More We Get Together

Today we began our day with an indoor, fantastic, fanciful bear hunt! Inspired by one of our favorite classroom books by Michael Rosen and Helen Oxenbury and with the help of Goober, the stuffed bear, our friends searched and searched. Wading through grass, schlepping through mud, and facing the wind and snow, our friends found Goober hiding all over the classroom in dark deep caves.

It was a hot, sunny day and our friends were more than ready to begin exploring. We foraged through some new terrain today, finding what felt like miles and miles of steps to climb. We climbed higher and higher, observing the plants and the view of the lake. We then found  a grass-tunnelled hill to run all the way down.

We were joined by Geoffrey's Mom Lindsay who came along to share with us in the spirit of parent collaboration.

We found a big shady tree, took out our comfy blanket and learned how to sing one of our merry good morning songs, "The More We Get Together" using sign language.

We learned from Lindsay how to sign the words, "more", "together", "happy" and "friends".  We jumped up and sang our song loud enough for the swans on the lake to hear!

Finally the day's heat called for an absolutely necessary and fun water play session! This time we offered three buckets of colored water and noticed how the colors changed as we dumped and transferred the water using our measuring containers.

Benjamin's little brother joined in the fun at pick-up time!

Thank you Lindsay for joining us for the day and sharing your talent with us! We have already incorporated it into our morning assembly routine.

Monday, May 20th, 2013: Puzzles and Hiking

Today highlighted a particularly fun, collaborative session with a new class puzzle. Our friends worked together to find corresponding pieces, problem solve, and finally connect the puzzle pieces into their proper places. When it comes to working with puzzles and 2s and 3s the journey is far more valuable than the final product.  They were excited to break it up and try a new configuration!

You may remember a few weeks ago we found an amazing tucked away spot to adventure in our beloved park. Our new spot offers fallen trees to climb and our own private lake-front for pretend fishing.  Our friends are enthusiastic outdoor experts at this point in the year and really enjoy challenging their bodies in the deep deep woods.

Oh! We almost forgot to mention a visit from a special friend. A red-winged black-bird hopped right over to us and showed us its bright red plumage. Good morning friend!

Thursday, May 16th, 2013: Water Play (in Pictures)

Wednesday, May 15th, 2013:
Mixed Media Collage w/ Harriet

As a part of parent collaboration month, today, Rachel's grandmother brought in some collage materials and we worked to make mixed media collages!

We began our collages outside after a romp along the lake. Friends worked with markers to create lines and other shapes on construction paper.

It began to get very windy, so, we moved our work back inside. Friends used glue to add buttons, tissue paper and other recycled materials to there construction paper.

Thank You Harriet!

Monday, May 13th, 2013: Hiking
Today we took an amazing hike in Prospect Park!  Friends enjoyed exploring in the deep "jungle". We found shelter among the branched of a tipi and frolicked in the still blooming bushes and trees!  We really enjoyed looking about the lake for animals and skipping rocks along the surface of the water.

Wednesday, May 8th, 2013: Rainy Day Fun

We love rainy days!  Friends donned their rain gear a set off on a rainy day walk.  On our journey, we sat down at a bus stop and -to our surprise- a bus stopped in front of us!  We hopped aboard and ..Off we went!

After that exciting ride, we set off for Prospect Park where friends mixed up some mud, stomped in puddles and used sticks to build a fort!

Tuesday, May 7th, 2013: Brooklyn Botanic Garden

Today was a beautiful day to frolic under the Cherry Blossoms!
Our friends comparing the size of the tree

We took a closer look at all of those Cherry Blossoms

Tree Love!

Kisses for the lovely cherry trees.

Enjoying a story under the fragrant blossoms.

Monday, May 6th, 2013: Collaboration

Today during morning independent work, Maeve, Amelie, and Olivia worked together using magna-tiles and our class projector to create a 3D "house". It was their first attempt at creating walls. Before now they used the tiles to stack, matching shapes and creating patterns.  Together they added another layer to their play and viewed their work projected brightly on the wall!

Morning Assembly presented a fun opportunity. We read the book "The Hidden Alphabet" by Laura Vaccaro Seeger. Together we found the letters that coincide with the first letter of each of our friends names.  We practiced using our tounges and lips to create letter sounds.

At the park we took an impromptu fishing trip inspired entirely and collaboratively by our creative class. They looked for long sticks as soon as we vacated the wagons and asked if they could take their fishing rods to the lake.  We caught tons of fish, but of course threw them back in! Afterward we enjoyed an imagination tale under a great big tree.

Back in our classroom after snack our friends engaged in their first group-wide cooperative play session.  They paired up on their own and began building block structures. They built and stacked.....then giggled and giggled as they knocked their structures down. There was much negotiation, language building, and collaboration.

We are so proud of our little collaborators!

Wednesday, May 1st, 2013: Farmer's Market

Today we  headed up the hill to the Bartel-Pritchard Circle Farmer's Market.

To our surprise there was a live band playing what one child labeled "classical" music (way to go Logan!). As we danced and clapped in the sunshine, we observed a violin, and a great big bass.

We were soon ready to use our senses to explore the market. Our first stop was a bright display of apples. Our friends walked alongside the fruit saying colors aloud and determining which was their favorite.

As we walked along the rows and visited the vendors we used our sense of smell, sight and of course taste to make observations.
Olivia takes a deep whiff of fresh green onion.

Ms. Kristen helps our friends take a peek at high root veggies.

Our final stop was a delicious selection of fresh baked breads and sweets. We had to choose a crunchy whole wheat baguette to add to the day's snack. Our friends chowed heartily on the bread as we talked about all the sights, sounds, and smells at the market.

Thank you to Sari, Rachel's Mom for coming along for the trip and lending a hand!

Tuesday, April 30th, 2013: Outdoor Play Stations

Today we set up outdoor play stations for the class. Our friends rotated freely, choosing between:

water play with expanding water beads, measuring cups and sifters and....

planting flowers using small shovels, homeade watering cans and new plants picked up on our class nursery trip last week.

When put alongside these two hands-on, awesomely messy activities, our third station (sidewalk chalk) didn't stand a chance!

Monday, April 29th, 2013: The Rain is Falling Down

Rainy days are always a great opportunity to take slow, exploratory walks, looking for puddles, singing songs about the rain, and making observations about the wet world around us. It's also a great chance for us to simultaneously give our friends a bit more freedom outside of the park while setting clear verbal boundaries that can be reinforced in a fun way. For example: holding hands, racing to a teacher, marching together as a group and counting as we wait for friends.

Today we crossed our first big street holding hands as a class.  It was a huge moment for our Monday/Wednesday class and we applaud their ability to listen to direction, follow through with action, and remain aware of their environment. Great job guys!

After much fun outdoors and a yummy snack indoors our friends embarked on a marathon clay session.

Most of our activities are set at a 10-15 minute limit but our friends surpassed our expectations today as they worked with much enthusiasm, fine tuning their clay techniques like pinching, rolling, and squeezing. They also labelled much of their work--there was a castle (Maeve),  a car with wheels (Logan), snakes (Olivia) and baby eggs (Micah).

Thursday, April 25th, 2013: Kensington Stables

Today we loaded up the wagons and took our Tuesday/Thursday class to the stables. Our friends have been talking about this trip for weeks and were very excited to meet Chocolate Chip! Before we began our rides, we took a look around the interior of Kensington Stables and found some exciting equestrian treasures!

We stumbled upon an authentic horseshoe, a grooming brush, and riding helmets.

Finally it was time to meet Chocolate and take a ride!! Our friends were very brave and very cool as they strolled along in the saddle.

Tessa held Ms. Gilly's hand as as trotted along.
Hannah held on tight as we cheered her on.

Chocolate Chip munched on apples to reward his hard work.
Jake wanted to ride all day!

Wednesday, April 24th, 2013: Off to the Nursery

Today we headed to our neighborhood nursery on Caton Ave. After our observations of our growing beans, planting seeds in soil on the porch, and digging with soil in the classroom our friends we're ready to reinforce their work with a visit to the nursery.

We used our senses to explore many different types of plants and flowers and add to our understanding of the natural world!

Tuesday, April 23rd, 2013: Wood Sculptures

We began work this week with an entirely new medium.  In our small group work we introduced WOOD! First we invited our friends to manipulate the wood shims and spools during morning independent work last week, giving them the chance to work with the materials without instruction. They immediately began stacking, balancing and creating structure like sculptures.

This week we added wood glue to the mix, explaining the concept of adding on piece by piece. Our friends completely honed in, focused and determined in their work. They were very proud of their wood creations.

Monday, April 22nd, 2013: Small Group Work

We have observed that morning independent work has taken on a slower, more focused feel.  Our friends are becoming more collaborative and creative, engaging in more concentrated play both together and alongside each other--negotiating toys, materials and space, using their words to express their ideas, and playing for longer periods of time. We have decided to harness this energy by designating a portion of the day as small group time.  In smaller groups the work becomes a bit deeper and slower giving children the opportunity to try new things and communicate more intimately.

Today's outdoor group:

Worked on the porch turning over soil, digging holes and finally planting and watering tiny lettuce seeds. Both classes have been adding to our growing porch garden.

Our indoor group worked with a new artistic tool. Paint took on a new dimension when they used textured paint rollers to create pattern and blend color.

Sunday, April 21st, 2013

Upcoming this Week:

TripsKensington Stables - Thursday. Our first trip to the stables was a great success. It's time for our Tuesday/Thursday class to take a closer look!
Prospect Park: Our Spring discovery continues as we search for budding plants.

Snack: Juicy green grapes , crunchy apples, oranges, blackberries, yummy tomatos, fresh hummus on whole wheat, crisp green peppers, and cantaloupe.

This week's teacher question continues with:
the broad How do things change?  the narrow  Taking a closer look.... and narrower still and just developed this week How can our feelings change?

Join us as we bring the curiosity and inquiry of our classroom to you, our families. Stop and take a look at our documentation near the sign-in sheet. Take a quick moment to ask your child the questions and hep them to develop descriptive words.
And remember...it is often more important to encourage the inquiry process than it is to find the right answer!
Is it a Dogwood or Magnolia?

Thursday, April 18th, 2013:Gardeners at Work

It was a beautiful day to begin planting in our garden!

First, we used spades to turn over the soil in our containers. Friends enjoyed digging in the dirt!

Thenwe took a closer look at our seeds.  We noticed that the seeds are small. We wondered what type of seeds these could be and used the packaging to find out what kind they were. Lettuce!
                     "I like Lettuce!"- Jai

We then made a little hole in the dirt to put in our seed. After putting our seeds in the hole, friends covered it with a blanket of soil.

Finally, our friends gave our seeds a nice drink of water!

After planting our lettuce seeds, we began to wonder how we can make sure that other friends knew that there were lettuce seeds sleeping in our containers. Friends thought hard about this. Finally, we decided that we needed to write some sort of sign! Take a look at our work on the porch during drop off this week!

Wednesday, April 17th, 2013:

The first day we greeted horses in the park, our friends asked to ride the friendly animals.  After a long winter of waving and shouting out cheery hellos, we were happy to finally follow up on that request!  Today we took a sunny walk to the Kensington Stables to take a closer look. Meet Chocolate Chip! The tiniest horse in Brooklyn.

.
Wendell donned his helmet and was ready to go!

Rachel was fearless from the start!

Olivia conquered her fear. She was so brave!

Micah was nervous at first but soon got the rhythm!

Logan held on tight for a nice easy ride.

After all that work, we thought Chocolate Chip deserved a treat!
Some of our friends were not quite ready to get that close to Chocolate Chip and that's okay. We all simply enjoyed the experience of meeting a horse up close.  Thanks to Kensington Stables and Chocolate Chip for making it a special day. See you next week with our Tuesday/Thursday class!

Tuesday, April 16th, 2013: Science on the Move

Is it an Egg?....

As we wandered into the Park today, one of our friends noticed an amazing sight in the growing green grass. Listen in and see what we discovered!

As you can hear, our friends desperately wanted to crack it open! (We have been talking about how birds lay eggs in their nests in the spring so our class was VERY curious.)

We decided that we had to investigate. One friend suggested we use our HANDS to crack it open.

While Ms. Gilly held the gigantic egg, Ms. Voya reared back her arm and with a ONE, TWO, THREE, landed a HIYAH! on the egg.

The egg did not crack.

Our friend Hannah, sure that Ms. Voya was just not strong enough, decided to try cracking the egg with her fist.

The egg did not crack.

Devin tried cracking the egg....
Olivia tried cracking the egg...

The egg did not break.

Finally, after much experimentation, we asked, "What would happen if we threw an egg on the ground?" Our friends answered quickly, "It would crack!". We decided to try it.

The egg made a loud "boom" as it hit the ground. As it rolled to the curb Wendell yelled,
"It did NOT crack!"

Is it an egg?

"No! Its a Wock!"  - Hannah

Saturday, April 13th, 2013

Today we headed to Ms. Gilly's alma matar for an amazing Mini-Conference presented by The Bank Street Center for Children's Literature.  Within minutes we were connected and recharged as the presenters reinforced our ideas about the power of early childhood literature. We gathered layers of experience from various children's authors, from pediatrician Dr. Perri Klass, and even Jazz musician, Louise Rogers who added an interactive musical element to story telling.  We are very excited to incorporate these newfound techniques into our literacy program at Play by the Park.

One of the most exciting aspects of the mini-conference was hearing from author Laura Vaccaro Seeger and obtaining autographed copies of her wonderful books for our classroom.

"First the Egg" a book that tells the beautiful story of change, is a perfect addition to our study of the changes happening all around us as spring makes its presence known. Thanks Laura!

Monday, April 8th, 2013

Everyday is a great day to go exploring in Prospect Park. Friends have been paying close attention to the changes happening around them. Our outdoor curriculum has been dynamic and fun as we take front row seats to watch the seasons change.  Friends have become very comfortable in the outdoors and now are able to really use there senses to  explore. From birds tweeting to finding tiny red buds, friends are curious and excited about the world around them.

To us, tree stumps now turn into place to climb and pretend with friends or a a tree house where we can cozy up and read stories.

Friends often say " Let's take a closer look!" We use many different tools to take a closer look at the world.

We enjoy the challenge of a good hike. Friends have found so many great places in the Park that are challenging to hike. Our new favorite spot is along a waterfall by the Audubon Center in Prospect Park.

And lastly, we have FUN! Childhood is a time for giggles, stories, dancing, picnics and singing and on our outings, we make plenty of time to play and have fun.
